Susan Hiller TATE Britain

Tate Britain has put up a major survey exhibition of Susan Hiller’s work, which is a trip to the unconscious and the subconscious. The exhibition celebrates one of the most important living artists of her generation and her artistic innovations. Hiller’s work, which examines disciplines often overlooked, invites the viewer to become part of this word and trace his/her own meanings.

Entering the exhibition, the viewer will encounter some of the most interesting works of Hiller, Recycled Works. The artist has recycled her earlier works by cutting up some of her paintings and by burning some others keeping the ashes produced by this process stored in glass bottles. Recycled Works is a brave piece especially because it requires a powerful act, that of ‘destroying’ previous works of art or some sort of reconstruction by creating new ones which replace the earlier ones giving to them new meaning and entity. This is a simple but potent work, which examines concepts such as the meaning of the new and the old. In other words, it explores in an intellectual way the essence of the birth of something new out of the ruins of something old.

Her work, Dedicated To The Unknown Artists, is a tribute to all the forgotten artists. A series of postcards collected from British seaside towns, which picture rough seas, are presented according to the type of images and accompanied with b charts. In this work, Hiller presents all the artists who have been overlooked and draws attention to their unrecognized labor. Objects such as postcards as well as the artists who produced them suddenly come in the focus of the viewer who realizes what is mostly forgotten.

One of my favorite art works made by Hiller, is the Momument, which is a diamond shaped installation of photographs of park’s memorial plaques. Hiller in this work pays attention to Londoners who died in a heroic way in their effort to rescue others. In front of this installation, a bench is placed with a recorder where the viewer is invited to sit on and listen to the voice of the artist who talks. In this way, the viewer comes into direct communication with the dead as if they have never passed away, as if they still have a voice, as if they still live among us.

The Last Silent Movie, this sound installation is again a tribute to all the extinct or nearly extinct languages. Hiller translated into English all these voices who speak in their languages and in this way gives to them a medium through which they can be heard and stay ‘alive’ in eternity. The viewer listening to this soundtrack engages with the language itself and the culture of the people who spoke it. It creates a strong sentiment of nostalgia and misplacement.

Another beautiful installation is Witness, which is presented in a dark room where wires with speakers on the end are hanging through the ceiling, forming a something like a curtain.Through these speakers, people from around the world describe their encounter with UFOs or with creatures from other spheres. The viewer can pass by all the wires, which travel him to all the different stories, presented. Once again the viewer becomes part of the installation and a witness himself.

The exhibition will last until the 15th of May 2011, don´t miss it!

Miu Miu A/W 11

Reviewing all the fashion shows of this season I can say without a doubt that Miuccia Prada was the best for me without wishing to minimize the work of others, but the Miu Miu collection for next winter is exquisite.
She has undoubtedly been inspired by the decades of 30's and 40's with highly characteristic patterns of the house - swallows and birds of all kinds - and some asian winks presenting the beautiful floral print in a new kimono.Clean skin, straight hair, beautiful faces accompanied by juicy shades on the lips and sunglasses. Collars, shoulder pads and skin applications are the stars in all the clothes that combine perfectly with a wonderful collection of shoes.
The italian designer plays with the volumes without any shame, making everything possible: a woman wrapped in forms and dimensions on the most trendy.

LFWE s/s 11

So London Fashion Week is over for another season. The fashion world and the media have moved on to Milan for the latest Autumn/Winter collections from the Italian powerhouses of fashion. But London still has something to offer the budding fashionista, and its available for the general public – London Fashion Weekend.
Held at the prestigious Somerset House, the home of London Fashion Week. The Vodafone London Fashion Weekend is an event that is an opportunity to see the latest trends for this season we are moving into, Spring/Summer 11 and to shop at 100 amazing pop up boutiques in the four floors of Somerset House.

The BFC Showspace hosts the catwalk show held regularly over the three day event. The showcase of the Spring/Summer trends we should be looking out for, styled by London Fashion Weekend regular Miss Molly.

BLACK SWAN

Collection one had the theme inspired by the film starring Natalie Portman, The Black Swan. Not all black and darkness, some gorgeous salmon pinks and peaches, with putty and nude compliments, in jump suits, skirts and tops, with a touch of ballerina sparkle. The collection included some fabulously layered pieces encompassing chiffon, tulle and lace and brought us light and dark just as the film does. Feminine, powerful pieces were sent down the runway in a well put together and thoughtful collection.

BORA AKSU

For four years running Bora Aksu has won the Topshop New Generation Award and is always a hot ticket at London Fashion Week. The audience were introduced to his Spring/Summer collection that was simply divine. Again a collection of light and dark, silky blue hues with soft greys, mixed with blacks and deeper greys. But a touch of deep red thrown in to compliment the ruffles and rouching of some luxurious fabrics. We saw the satin blouse with bow collar that is popular this coming season, the collection felt feminine but strong with interesting use of padding on the shoulders and front of the outfits.

COLOUR BLOCKING-LADY BRIGHT

Miss Molly described the Spring/Summer trends to the audience and explained how you don’t have to go OTT when updating your wardrobe, “choose accessories to update your wardrobe easily, from rings to hairbands”, she also described how you don’t have to take a trend to the max, just have one piece in your outfit that is ‘on trend’ to work with the rest of your outfit and you are set for the season. The colour blocking collection shown was an English eccentric take on the trend. described as “Agatha Christie meets Princess Margaret in a Christopher Kane kinda way”.he colours were hot and vibrant and the shoes were amazing. A homage to the Milan Fashion Weeks trend for ice-pick heels.

MARK FAST

Mark Fast has previously collaborated with Topshop and has created outfits for Kylie, Rhianna and Eliza Doolittle. The collection of his Spring/Summer collection literally swished down the catwalk. We could here the tassels, ruffles and sequins moving down the runway. Bright and sparkling the collection was fresh and vibrant. With cut outs rather than prints, layering and laced materials, the collection was flattering and fun. A great closing collection to the showcase at the Somerset House.

THE PALE BLUE DOOR, Number 5 London

Last night I had the opportunity to dinner in a homemade structure that resembles an overgrown dollhouse located down a difficult to find road, the Pale Blue Door, designed by Tony Hornecker.
An art installation of balconies and secret rooms, built and furnished with the trash and castoffs that Hornecker collected around town for his fantastical creation.
